BEATBOXING

THE PREMISE

My single most dedicated hobby. It reflects my core values of:

  • Openness (being an art form that can be done anywhere),

  • Innovative (experimentation with all different kinds of sounds)

  • Rigorous (fundamental sounds that form the basics of all beats)

And of course, it's just fun to make beats with your mouth while walking down the street. How can you beat that?

VIDEOS

Beatbox Tigers, FIRSTBASS Rap, and Sympoh Breakdance Show

The ultimate hip hop collaboration, the Beatbox Tigers and Firstbass collaborated to put on a special performance for the Sympoh breakdance half-time show. Check out at 0:20 seconds for me breaking down my own dance moves.

Athens, Greece Performance

A show that I put on during the time I was living in Athens. The disco lights going off was not planned, but certainly enhanced the experience.

Arch & Arrow Open Mic Nights

An excerpt with more experimental sounds. I became such a regular at the Arch & Arrow Open Mic nights that I actually became the host for about a year - it was one of my favorite gigs, being able to spotlight all kinds of artists, particularly poets.

INITIATIVES

The Beatbox Tigers

A student group that I helped start up during undergrad at Princeton, the one-and-only beatbox club in the Ivy League as far as we knew. We hosted beginner workshops and did collaborative music videos with acapella groups.

Upcoming: Beatbox PDX

Live in Portland and want to join the beatbox fun? Send an email to beatboxpdx@gmail.com and I'll let you know when this group gets fully up and running.

Street Busking in Athens

I borrowed an amp sound system and microphone and went busking (street performing) on the streets of Athens. Tippers were fairly generous, and a little girl even gave me a delicious smoothie.

First Friday Beatbox Class

I took my set-up from my dog drawing gig (see in Everything Dogs), and taught a beatboxing class on the streets of downtown Tulsa, to promote the Tulsa Timebank (a volunteer system where for one hour of service, you receive an hour back).
